Day 1 - bonfire
I was so excited to get started on this 5 minute challenge, but the prompt bonfire wasn’t the easiest start for me. Not all prompts come easy, but this helps you to grow as an artist. Luckily, I had just purchased a few new stencils and one of them reminded me of the top view of a campfire! I decided to take it and run with it.
Day 2 - brown bag it
I save a lot of my packaging materials to use later in my art journaling, so this prompt was perfect. I used some fun packaging that I had saved away to inspire me for this spread.
Day 3 - fourteen
I have to be honest, this prompt stumped be a bit at first. I have never thought of a number as a source of inspiration before. But this is one of the reasons why I enjoy the prompts given, because it can inspire us in new and unexpected ways.
Day 4 - rooted
I was pretty excited for this prompt! I love botanicals so this spread happened pretty naturally for me. I have had this drawing cut out for quite some time. But, it was so tall that I can’t use it in most of my journals. This vertical journal was the ideal place to use it!
Day 5 - white out
White out felt all too real! Here in the midwest we have been having blizzard-like conditions. I was thinking of seeing the snow and sky through the branches. I used one of my new stencils that resembled this effect.
Day 6 - spill
When I hear spill, I think acrylic inks! It has happened far too many times that I’m using these inks, forget to screw the cap back on, and then it goes EVERYWHERE! So I knew I had to use some acrylic ink for this prompt. And I actually ended up using too much, even after reminding myself not to!
Day 7 - cobblestone
I had a new stencil and this felt like the ideal place to break it in. Even though this city map stencil didn’t totally fit the cobblestone prompt, but when I think of cobblestone I think of roads in old cities.
Day 8 - bright
Alright, so this page is not my favorite. It definitely did not turn out the way I had envisioned. I think this is a great lesson for me, though, not every page will be your favorite. And that is OKAY and NORMAL!
For bright, I first thought of using my bright, neon acrylic inks. I usually use these with A LOT of water - which doesn’t always mesh well when you are working in a bound book. The waters and ink will soak through the pages very quickly if you aren’t careful. I decided to go in another direction and I never really caught my footing.
Day 9 - cloud
To be honest, I had a really hard time with this prompt. I used blue and white a couple of days before with the whiteout prompt. And when I think of clouds I think of blue and white. Also, I don’t usually create literal art, I enjoy creating abstract art.
So, I took to Pinterest to find some new inspiration. The photos that kept pulling me in were of the dark, stormy, cloudy nights. Bold black and whites are ALWAYS inspiring to me! I went for it, despite the possibly unconventional direction.
Listen to what inspires you and go for it! That’s when the best art is made.
Day 10 - mustard
Let’s be honest, the color mustard is always a source of inspiration for me! It is one of my favorite colors and I always enjoy using it.
Day 11 - worn
When I saw the prompt: worn, my thoughts went to a piece of clothing that was tattered. Even though this did not turn out quite like I envisioned, I really enjoy how this turned out. A good lesson to always stay flexible and see where your art practice takes you.
Day 12 - tack it
When I saw the prompt: tack it - I thought of tacking something up on a bulletin board with a push pin. I couldn’t think of a way to actually use the push pin I wanted to, because it is so thick. Instead, I turned to my trusty sewing needle and added in some hand stitching.
Day 13 - teabag
I think teabags are always fun to use for collage! This is the perfect time of year for me to use this prompt. I enjoy having a cup of warm tea on these cold winter evenings!
Day 14 - postage
I took inspiration from my days as a young teenager, when I would send mail art to friends! I would spend my time drawing zentangle-like doodles with all different colored gel and glitter pens. On the inside, I included more artwork. Along with a letter to catch up on our day-to-day lives, and words of well wishes to send them love.
For this spread, I wanted to bring my “old” style and my “new” style together. I included bright colors as well as a message under the fold out. But, the rest of my spread fits my current aesthetic of using one color with bold black and whites.
Day 15 - red
I was pumped up for this last prompt! Red is such a bold and fun color, but I don’t use it all that often. I think because it is so overpowering in a lot of ways, I tend to stay away from it. I knew I wanted this page to be bold, graphic, and colorful - this is why I paired it with teal. It was fun to play with two strong colors in one spread.
