Upcycling: From Box to Journal Cover
DIY Upcycled Art Journal Cover
I recently got a box in the mail with a texture that super smooth and it just felt amazing! It had this fun peekaboo window in the front and I knew I had to make something out of it. My first thought was, “Why not turn this into a journal cover?”
I wasn’t too thrilled about that window being smack dab in the middle, so I played around with the design a bit. I ended up extending it out and stitching the pieces together on my sewing machine. My goal for this project was not *perfection* - it was to take this spur-of-the-moment idea and run with it, seeing where it would lead me! It didn’t turn out perfect, but I'm totally okay with that. Perfection often gets in my way, and embracing those little imperfections has made this experience so much more rewarding.
Getting into the project, I didn’t have a concrete plan, which can sometimes be a blessing in disguise. I started with some neutral tones and layered collage papers and scraps, enjoying the process and seeing where it led me. If you know me, you know that I love to add texture and dimension in everything I create. Oftentimes I do this by adding fabric! I also added some distressing with sandpaper to give it a more carefree and grunged-up look.
When it came to the peekaboo window, the idea of adding beads really piqued my interest. After experimenting a bit, I ended up stringing beads and tiny fabric bits across the opening. It was an element of fun and creativity that truly made the journal cover feel like a piece of art.
