Creativity is more than just creating art

January 30, 2026

A direct line from my art table to your inbox—where creativity, connection, and a little chaos collide.

Something has been shifting in my personal art practice. In a positive way. In a much needed way. In a way that can't quite be put into words yet.

The thing that I'm realizing more and more is how much creativity is intertwined with our well-being

They work together in a cyclical loop. The weekly creativity tracker that I shared towards the beginning of the month has naturally evolved in a creativity and well-being tracker. The question that I'm asking myself is "How did I nurture my creativity and well-being today?"

The things that I was taking note of, I realize, may not seem directly related to creativity. For example,

  • "went for drinks and dinner with friends" or
  • "choosing to go to sleep instead of art journaling" or
  • "taking an everything shower and not rushing."

On the surface, these actions seem like they are taking time away from making art.

But, I would counter with →

  • Dinner with friends gets you out of the house and provides the opportunity for real human connection. Conversation stimulates your brain and takes you out of the thought loops. It helps change up your rhythm and in your next art session you realize you aren't overthinking ever decision as much.

  • Going to sleep instead of creating art, means that you aren't pushing yourself to fill some sort of quota. You give your mind and body much needed rest. This sets you on a path of long term, sustainable creativity. The goal is not to sprint, then crash and burn. We want creativity infused with our everyday life.

  • Taking a long, hot shower gives you time away from the overstimulation that usually surrounds you. The steam helps you to breathe easier. The body scrub brings awareness to each part of your body as you feel the pressure. This experience remains you that your mind and body are connected and part of a greater whole.

Creativity is more than just the time we spend physically creating art.

Even though this is one of the busiest times for me, with the BB Bash starting in a couple of days, this intention to have more balance and nurture my creativity has led to more personal art making in the past month than I can remember in the last couple of years.

I thought you might like to see what I've been creating this month. I started with a simple journal made from various sizes of sulphite paper and a pamphlet stitch. Primarily using scraps from the bottom of my scraps bin. Nothing expensive and not precious in any way. I started with one, and now I have filled three. My joy typically comes from creating journals, not necessarily working in them. So this has been an interesting (and exciting) shift this month.
