Creativity is a choice

On Wednesday, I took a half day to take advantage of the beautiful weather and headed to the pool for the afternoon.
I’m the type of person who has to be doing something with her hands, so I tucked my stitching project — a new journal cover — in my bag, and off I went.
At the pool’s edge, an iced coffee at the ready and an audiobook in my ears, I pulled out my stitching and settled in, garnering a few odd glances and a few others asking what I was working on. I found myself incredibly content.
And it got me thinking about the people who say they don’t have time. And while in some seasons that can be true, it really comes down to our choices. I feel like creativity is deeply ingrained in me — and yet it is still something I have to choose. A practice I return to, time and time again, day after day.
Maybe a consistent creative practice is something you deeply desire but can never quite reach. Or maybe you’re simply looking for more ways to infuse creativity into your everyday life. Either way, I made something for you — and it’s free. You just have to choose it.
I’m inviting you to join me for BB Journals Jumpstart — a free, four-day live event running August 6–9. Each day, we’ll explore one part of my four-part creative practice philosophy: Prework, Play, Construct, and Embellish. Together, we’ll make a mini journal from scratch, and you’ll walk away with both a finished piece and a real sense of what a creative practice can look and feel like for you.
These four days aren’t just about learning techniques. They’re about remembering that you are someone who makes things — and that that person doesn’t require a perfect setup, a dedicated studio, or a wide open afternoon. She just requires a choice.
And we’re going to make that choice together, one day at a time. Each session, we’ll move through one part of the framework — Prework, Play, Construct, Embellish — building a mini journal from scratch as we go. The journal is the vehicle. What you’re really building is the felt sense of what it means to move through a creative process from beginning to end, with intention and without pressure.
