Finding your voice is easier than you think

Every time I teach the 14-week BB Art Journals class, I create a yummy art journal alongside my students. I didn't set out to do this, but look what happened...
Dashes, everywhere. Dashes in the fabric I pulled from my stash. Dashes stitched onto the cover. Dashes marked on my paper.
When creating I never had the thought, "let's use a lot of dashes in this project." But my hands kept going back to it. It didn't matter the material I was using or the technique I was using.
I often get told that my work is recognizable, even when I'm trying out different colors or new materials. And I get asked, "how do I find my art style and voice?"
I think it comes back to not trying to reinvent the wheel, it's about doing. Letting your hands work without letting your head get in the way.
To be honest, if I had thought about it too much a voice in my head would've said that I was repeating myself too much.
But here's the thing, your voice is in the marks you make, the way you put colors together, and the supplies you reach for. It's what you are already doing, not in what you think you should be doing.
It's the repetition that ties these pieces together into a cohesive project and allows your style to shine through.
Go back through some of your work this week and take note of what repeats, and then... lean into it.
