Grid Journal Newbie? Here’s What You Need to Get Started

Are you new to grid journaling? Don’t worry, I’ve got all of the tips you need to get started!

First of all - what is grid journaling? It’s when you create art inside of shapes that form a grid.

Sounds easy enough, right? Right!

Here’s what you need to get started:

  1. A Substrate

  2. Art Supplies

  3. A Way to Draw Your Grids

Keep reading to find out what each of those means! →

  1. A Substrate

    • A substrate can be anything that you use as your base and apply your materials onto!

    • My preference is a journal because I can keep all of my grid spreads together and flip thru them.

    • Other substrate ideas →

      • Any kind of paper! Printer paper, book text, recycled packaging, you get the idea.

      • Canvas.

      • Cardboard - seriously, anything goes!

  2. Art Supplies

    • Even your most basic “school” art supplies will suffice.

      • Markers, crayons, colored pencils, glue sticks, fun papers, etc.

    • Of course, your fancy supplies will work amazingly, too! But don’t feel the need to rush out and buy supplies (unless you want to, I won’t get in your way 😉)

  3. A Way to Draw Your Grid

    • Any shape will work, I tend to stick to rectangles - but circles would be fun, too!

    • Use an object you have on hand to trace out your shape (business card, sticky note, etc.)

    • If you want to make this process even easier - download my free template that will help you draw out your grid! Print, cut out, and trace!

Grid journaling is seriously one of my favorite creative outlets. I love the thrill of working on all the boxes at once — individually they can be so different but still come together in a cohesive way, almost like a tiny collection of art.

Are you a bit scared to get started? That blank-page intimidation is real, my friend! My go-to start is some carefree pencil scribbles, just to break the ice. From there, it’s all about layering: collage bits, some paint, crayons, and anything else you can think of! Add as many layers as you want!
