Escaping Self-Critique & Loosening Up

Play Along Journal Series Week 4 Part 1

Collage is one of my favorite techniques, and in this piece, I opted for clustering and grouping the bits of paper to create a visually engaging focal point. As I journeyed through the creation process, I found myself feeling self-conscious about what I was creating, rather than inspired. My creative juices weren't flowing as freely as I'd hoped, so I splashed some scribbles on the page to remind myself not to take it too seriously. Sometimes, loosening up and letting things flow is just the ticket. Adding white gesso in a somewhat messy manner helped to blur the collage's edges, blending in some harmony and preventing harsh lines.

My fun discovery for the day: Blending the gesso with my finger proved to be the best method for achieving the desired effect!
