Blending Text into Your Art Pages
Play Along Journal Series Week 28
In this journal series, I'll show you how to turn text into a design element. With some artistic techniques like dry brushing with gesso and creating asymmetrical balance with collage elements. One thing that really excites me about mixed media art is the ability to take something as simple as text or scribbles and transform them into captivating design elements. I love using handwriting as a pattern or base layer to build upon by pushing my letters together and creating an almost loopy effect
For me, when I’m doing collages it's not necessary when you're thinking about symmetry to do the exact same thing on both sides of the page. It does not need to be the exact same size of paper that you're adding, the exact same marks. But sometimes when you're just adding a hint of the same thing, you can create that asymmetrical balance that ends up being very pleasing aesthetically to the eye.
The more that we say “what if" and lean into that, the more comfortable we'll get with taking risks and figuring out those creative problem-solving skills that are so essential in our work.
